    Guitarist and keyboardist Garry Frost had left Moving Pictures after their second album, Matinée (Frost had co-written Moving Pictures’ 1981 #1 hit What About Me? ) and was writing songs for a proposed new band when he saw Eric Weideman singing on the ‘Red Faces’ talent segment of Melbourne TV show Hey Hey It’s Saturday.

    Garry drove from Sydney to Melbourne to recruit Weideman.

    The pair were joined by Garry’s brother, Bill, on bass and James Barton on drums. The band’s name, 1927, was drawn from a hat of suggestions and was from a favourite saying by Garry, “I haven’t done that since 1927”.

    1927 proved very popular on the local scene in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and enjoyed hits with the songs That’s When I Think of You, If I Could, Compulsory Hero and Tell Me a Story.

    Their multi-platinum album, …ish (1988), reached #1 in Australia and was follow
